Dilation and evacuation abortion

Dilation and evacuation abortion (D&E) is widening the cervix and surgically removing the contents of the uterus for a for a second-trimester pregnancy. Approximately 11% of induced abortions are performed in the second trimester. Dilation and evacuation abortion (D&E) is performed under anesthesia

Before performing a Dilation and evacuation abortion (D&E) abortion the cervix is softened and passively dilated using osmotic dilators and/or misoprostol. After dilation a vacuum curette is inserted through the cervix and amniotic fluid is sucked out of the uterus. Surgical instruments are then used to remove the rest of the uterus tissue

After removal of all fetal tissue, the uterine cavity is thoroughly curetted to ensure that all placental tissue, blood, and membranes are removed. The uterus will then be massaged to ensure it is firmly contracted to minimize post operative bleeding. The entire D&E procedure usually takes less than 30 minutes
